Healthy Diabetes Diet

In order to keep the blood glucose in a healthy balance, a healthy diabetes diet is needed and the right discipline to follow it through.

According to the National Diabetes Information Clearing House (NDIC), a diabetic person must eat equal amounts of food on a daily basis; eat their meals and snacks at a regular time daily, and to not skip meals or snacks.

Aside from monitoring the sugar level, diabetic persons must also check their cholesterol level as they are also at risk in having a heart disease.

To maintain the blood sugar levels and cholesterol, you need to have a healthy food selection, do regular exercises and take the medicines that your doctor prescribed to you.

The ADA has provided some dietary approval for retaining healthy cholesterol and triglyceride ranges:

  • Choose lean meats and meat substitutes
  • Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day
  • Eat more foods that are high in fiber
  • Eat less salt and sodium
  • Switch to low-fat or fat-free dairy products
  • Eat less fats, especially less saturated fats
  • Limit foods that are high in cholesterol like egg yolks, high-fat dairy products,  high-fat meat, and poultry
  • Eat fish two or three times a week with high-protective fat like tuna and salmon
  • Cook in low-fat methods like roasting, grilling, by cooking using spray or baking
